What does beautiful Cleveland County and Shelby NC have in common with the best-of-the-best metropolis? Not much, you may think at first glance. However, a little research shows how much we have to offer.
We boast of movies made here, ranging from the blockbuster, “The Hunger Games,” to the obscure, “Blood Done Sign My Name.” There is even a movie studio complex located at 1 Movie Studio Road (what else) between Shelby and Boiling Springs. It’s for sale, just in case you’re in the market, and includes a helicopter pad, runway, hotel and 100,000 gallon water tank used to film scenes for the movie “The Abyss.”
Perhaps you’ve heard of our music legends. Does Earl Scruggs sound familiar? If not, “let me tell you ‘bout a story of a man named Jed” that Earl made famous picking and singing about in the intro to the Beverly Hillbillies. Scruggs, a Shelby native, was a bluegrass music legend known for his pioneering banjo style.
Does country music icon Don Gibson strike any cords with you? Though he wrote and recorded many hits he is best known for “I Can’t Stop Loving You.” This song was also recorded by Ray Charles (not from here, but we still loved him.) The 400 seat Don Gibson Theater located in uptown Shelby is an art deco style tribute to Don and hosts some of today’s best entertainers, comedians, magicians, actors, and vocalists.
If you’ve heard of World Heavy Weight Champion Floyd Patterson then you’re as old as I am. He was born here in Cleveland County, which is also home to another thing “world,” as Shelby is the permanent home of the American Legion Baseball World Series.
As if all this wasn’t enough, Cleveland County is home to the largest county fair in North Carolina. Shelby is where the Jaws Of Life are manufactured, and everyone’s favorite dish, Livermush, as featured on Tastes Of America.
I am telling you about all of this to make this point: look around your company. If you look with a keen eye and open mind, you can come up with a long list of things to promote your company. Some of the things may not interest you anymore, but those who haven’t heard of your company before will be interested in all sorts of tidbits.
Keep a good record of activities and accomplishments. Note when you did something that helped you make a difference, someone famous was introduced to you or related to a co-worker, a special project you were involved in. Hobbies, vacation destinations, disasters and triumphs are all important to you, your clients, and prospective clients. All of these are tools that can help you promote, and no business can survive without promotion.
Did you know Pancrete was used at the National Archives? Pancrete is helping to protect the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution. Perhaps your business or community has something famous to boast about you’d like to share below?
