Business Sustainability: Avoid the Post-Holiday BLAHS

Once the holiday music is silenced, the lights are turned off, the tree is taken down and the festivities are over, many experience an emotional and physical let down. Since your business is made up of people, and you want them to be upbeat and productive, get creative and remedy this.

It can be easy. If you don’t already have simple employee rewards program and fun, free activities look on the web. You’ll find hundreds of ideas. Assign the organizing and overseeing of this to the right person (you know who), and start the year off right.
Our company is going to have a ping-pong tournament in early March. After the first of the year, the ping-pong table will be busy with employees practicing on breaks and at lunch. This competition sparks new interest and some good natured ribbing. The exercise will help ward off the wintertime woes as well as the few pounds that may have been packed on. It will also give them another reason to look forward to work. Other tournaments or competitions can be darts, ring toss, weight loss, Nerf basketball, etc.
Encourage all employees to contribute ideas of how things can be improved in the new year by putting out a “resolutions” box. It can be anonymous if you like. Most people plan to make changes in their work and personal life as a new beginning. What you get from them can be revealing and invaluable information that you would otherwise not know. Make sure to read the contributions before the end of the year. It will help you with a new beginning as well.
Another activity is to announce a “Spruce Up Day.”  If possible, rearrange office furniture, spruce up desks, get some new artwork, pull down those post-its, put items in storage that aren’t used, or add some things which are bright and new. Make sure to limit the time period. You’ll be surprised how a quick morning of this kind of activity gets things moving. Be sure to let the maintenance staff know this is going to happen so they will be ready to cart things off or help move or re-hang things.
